As an example of a state policy on sweepstakes promotions, Tennessee residents are prohibited by a policy of the Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission (and not a state law) from entering sweepstakes online sponsored by manufacturers of wines and liquors; however, Tennessee residents may enter many of these same sweepstakes promotions by entries delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.[13] Another example is that Tennessee state law prohibits sweepstakes agencies and sponsors from requiring sweepstakes prize winners to submit to "in perpetuity" publicity releases.

With big-ticket items on the line, competition can get fierce. "I've gotten swear words said to me when I've won stuff," admits Audrey Bernhard, 35, who has scored about $11,000 in prizes this year. On Twitter especially, overly aggressive sweepers can come out of the woodwork. "You'll get direct messages—they'll chew you out and they'll blacklist you," adds Arena Thompson. "A lot of people that win big, they maybe get too addicted to it. It's very addictive to win constantly and have FedEx and UPS show up at your door. They get too deep into it and lose perspective that it's a game of chance."

Safeguard Against Scams   Watch out for scams and sweepstakes that sell players' information. Some sweepstakes throw in special offers that must be opted out of by unclicking tiny boxes at the bottom of the online entry form. Skip anything that asks for a credit card number. A legitimate sweepstakes would never ask for it. And never pay money to enter a sweepstakes. The purpose of contests is to generate buzz for a product or brand, not for them to make money from players.
Fortunately, there are some better alternatives when it comes to getting free stuff online and free samples by mail no surveys no catch. You do not have to fill out 100 surveys that require you to provide all of your personal information. Often times, this extremely sensitive information end up in the hands of web masters, whose sole purpose is to distribute your info to malicious companies. Now, not all survey sites are scams set up by criminals out to steal your identity. Some of these sites may get you a buck or two after completing a series of surveys from various companies, and may even offer you some cute little trinkets. However, even these offers can prove to be difficult to find, and who has the time to filter through all of the garbage?

The Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to disqualify any individual it finds to be tampering with the entry process or the operation of the Sweepstakes or to be acting in violation of the Official Rules of this or any other promotion, or in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner. Any attempt by any person to undermine the legitimate operation of the Sweepstakes may be a violation of criminal and civil law, and, should such an attempt be made, the Sponsor reserves the right to seek damages from any such person to the fullest extent permitted by law. The Sponsor's failure to enforce any term of these Official Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision.
