To streamline things, some sweepers are more selective about what they go after, as well as what they accept. "The first year I got into it, I entered everything and got a lot of stuff that was like, 'Eh, what am I going to do with that?'" says Gagnon. "I'm pickier now." Sweepers have also been known to turn down prizes they'd rather not pay taxes on; taxes are mandatory for prizes with values over a certain amount. Jennifer Joyner, a 31-year-old sweeper in South Carolina, explains, "If it comes down to a trip, it's got to be something that's once-in-a-lifetime, because the value of most of them is just not worth the taxes. I can plan something myself for a lot less. It's got to be something like a trip to Antarctica, something crazy."
Greg Goodson cofounded Rafflecopter, a widget for running online giveaways, and has collaborated with companies like NBC and Gap on sweepstakes. In an e-mail interview, he said that companies typically decide to run sweeps for three reasons: "to grow their online presence, to drive some buzz for their brand, and to give back to their fans." But the relationship between brands and sweepers can be uneasy.
Buried on the Web sites was information about this resulting in a $9.99 monthly charge on my cell phone bill. These were premium text scams, third party companies get you to enter a PIN and accept their charges. While premium texting is a great way to pay for ringtones or use your mobile phone to donate to the Red Cross, it's also an easy way to trick you into paying $10 a month or more into a black hole.
For sweepers, the time and energy investment can be staggering. "There's certainly no black-and-white textbook for sweeping," says Arena Thompson, a 33-year-old in Oregon who has been entering sweepstakes since 2010. "A lot of it is you have to develop your own radar for scams and proper etiquette. I think there's a strong learning curve for learning the ins and outs."

If you do have your own website then it's generally a good idea to embed your campaign within the site. All Gleam users have the ability to embed their sweepstakes in any page that accepts basic HTML. This could be a blog post, a page on your website or on a third party site/social network that allows you to insert code. Facebook for instance will allow you to run a sweepstakes within a tab on your Facebook page.

Then there is the problem with the forums themselves. Full of increasing negativity and crackpots. Racist jokes are allowed, anti-gay, bigoted comments are allowed, and if reported for being offensive, the person reporting them are told they are aggressively attacking the racist and that they will be banned. Over the last 18 months, it has only become worse, reminding this member of websites like Stormfront. Any member who publicly challenges those members, is immediately banned, as are their spouses. It does not matter if you are a paying member. Any attempt to contact the owner about this development has gone unanswered.

Though the internet has helped the sweeping community diversify, there remains a large contingent of sweepers who are stay-at-home mothers. For them, sweeping starts off as a way to pass time, occasionally growing into a noteworthy source of income. "When I started hardcore sweeping again in May, part of my goal was winning Christmas presents," says Thompson. "But the other part was to show my husband that this is a viable work alternative, because my four-year-old's going to go into kindergarten next year."

Even if you type something like "get free stuff no scam", or even, "free stuff online without surveys" you still might end up spending hours looking up and visiting websites offering freebies by mail just to find out that the offer that you recently found is yet another scam. Without a doubt, this can get old and frustrating, and in the end, you will find yourself at your nearest retailer paying full price for the item that you initially set out to get for free.
