To be clear I work at WynZyn. The entire business is about sweepstakes. We aggregate 1,000s of other companies sweeps from around the web. Aggregating sweeps is not unique, there are 5 or so other companies who do this as well. What we do to make our offering more enticing is - when you enter those 3rd party sweeps you get bonus entries from WynZyn into the WynZyn weekly sweeps. It’s also a pretty great place to stay organized. WynZyn - Login

Twitter proved to be an interesting new venue for contests. I entered nine contests there. Most seem like ploys to get more followers, including some very legit-looking contests from designer Vivienne Tam, and a Web site I know and like called DealsPlus. But many Twitter contests looked completely bogus, including one offered by a guy with 72 followers and a page rife with typos.

Adds Clarke: "I see some people on these sites who enter everything, and I'm like, 'Why are you doing that?' One time I think it was for a beach towel. You're spending all your time on a beach towel? I'll go get you a beach towel." Not to mention, sometimes sweepers go after a grand prize and end up with a much less appealing second or third-place options. That's how Ambrea Kuhn ended up with her worst prize: "It was one of those fold-up Frisbees. I had no idea what it was, and it flipped me in the face." Sweeper Dawn Dodge's oddest prize was a bacon-scented alarm clock iPhone accessory. (She doesn't own an iPhone.)

I created a new e-mail account to use with all the entry forms. I wanted to keep my working e-mail account free of junk, but I also wanted to determine how much spam the contests generated. I thought that would be enough to keep myself isolated from the contest solicitors, but almost every entry form mandated a phone number and street address. I used the general ABC street address and bought a prepaid phone to handle any incoming calls or texts.

GetitFree is nothing but a fake. They say in emails that you either qualify for a certain sample or that they need your info to verify it, but once you get that far, you do offers and surveys. Normal and fair, right? Guess what? Once you run that gamut, you get matched to some OTHER samples, on another website, just to run the whole thing again….and again. It’s all fake!

Contest managers want a winner who promotes the brand, is excited, and will spread the word to his or her followers after winning. For social media contests especially, there's a big benefit to choosing a winner who has a decent personal following. Often the rules favor those who best represent the brand by meeting some arbitrary criteria for the "best" comment or entry.
